New Hangout and Sportsbar.
Gastown has a new street‑level gathering place in the Woodward’s Building.
The Basement, now open at 136 West Cordova. With a 160‑person event space and a casual sports‑bar atmosphere, it’s quickly becoming a go‑to spot for neighbourhood hangouts.
The Basement serves classic pub favourites—curly fries, nachos, burgers—and keeps sports on rotation across multiple screens. There’s also a pool table for anyone wanting to play a round. The vibe is relaxed, friendly, and rooted in the idea of being a place where people can simply show up and feel welcome.
The ownership team is connected to Mum’s The Word on Commercial Drive, bringing experience from another well‑loved local spot. The space itself has seen several tenants over the past few years, from Popup to Tequila Lounge to The Cordova, GPO Bar and Kitchen, and The Charles Bar. The Basement is the newest chapter in this corner’s long history—and one that feels ready to stay in the Hastings corridor.
Visit The Basement.
The Art Party, a DTES‑based nonprofit supporting BIPOC, 2SLGBTQIA+, and seniors 50+ communities, is partnering with The Basement to explore new arts and culture programming in the space.
Its accessibility, size, and DJ booth make it a promising venue for community‑driven events.
